EMERGENCY PEST GUIDE

I Think I Have Termites

Termites work silently. If you're seeing signs, damage may have been building for months. Here's how to confirm and what to do.

Danger Level: Moderate — Use common sense
1

Look for Mud Tubes

Subterranean termites build mud tubes — pencil-width tunnels running from the soil up your foundation walls. Check the exterior foundation, garage walls, and anywhere concrete meets wood. Break a tube open — if you see small, white insects inside, you have active termites.

2

Tap Wood Surfaces

Use the handle of a screwdriver to tap wood trim around doors, windows, and baseboards. Hollow or papery-sounding wood means termites have eaten the interior. Press into suspected areas — if the wood gives way easily, there's damage.

3

Check for Swarmers

Termite swarmers look like small, dark flying ants with equal-length wings. In Arizona, swarm season is January through April. If you find discarded wings on windowsills or near light fixtures, swarmers have been in your house — and the colony is nearby.

4

What NOT to Do

Don't disturb mud tubes extensively — if you break them, termites just build new ones, and you lose the ability to show an inspector where the activity is. Don't use over-the-counter sprays — they kill surface termites but don't reach the colony. Don't panic — termite damage happens slowly. You have time to get a professional assessment.
